The Prayer of Jabez—Revisited

Bruce Wilkinson’s The Prayer of Jabez, published in 2000, became an international bestseller while receiving an equal amount of criticism for reasons obvious to many Christians:

“Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” (1 Chronicles 4: 9-10, New King James Version)*

It’s certainly appropriate to pray for deliverance from evil (per “The Lord’s Prayer”), but what do we really want when asking for God’s blessing? Is there a deeper longing we all share and a greater deliverance God has promised—and granted—through Jesus our Lord?

While this blog post and video is a departure from a discussion on Denney, it nonetheless emphasizes our common need for deliverance.

Listen to Pastor John share part of his own experience praying for God’s blessing.
