James Denney, D.D.

James Denney (1856-1917) was a Scottish theologian and New Testament scholar whose premature death prevented him from having what would have been a major impact on Evangelicalism and the future of the Church. Only within the past ten years have his publications returned to the attention of thoughtful pastors and theologians looking for an alternative to fundamentalism and an evangelicalism that is increasingly focused on self-preservation instead of proclaiming “Jesus Christ crucified, the power of God unto salvation.”

Denney’s great contribution comes in the area of the doctrine of the Atonement, God’s reconciling work through Jesus’ death on the cross, over and against the more liberal theological positions—as well as the rigid fundamentalism—of his day and ours.

This blog will present Denney’s thoughts and ideas, sharing excerpts from his writings and others, and providing links to his published works. It will also include short video comments by a pastor who spent his life studying Denney, sharing a “liberating gospel” with a world that still needs to hear it.

You can find most of Denney’s published writings at Search Results | Logos Bible Software.
