Clear Thinking on Saving Faith

James Denney stresses the personal and relational aspects of Christian epistemology (the study or theory of “knowing”) over against a primary focus on propositional knowledge so relied upon by modern evangelicals.

"In the experience of reconciliation to God through Christ is to be found the principle and touchstone of all genuine Christian doctrine: whatever can be derived from this experience and is consistent with it is true and necessary; whatever is incompatible with it lacks the essential Christian character” (The Christian Doctrine of Reconciliation [London, Hodder & Stoughton, 1917], p 7, italics mine).

Pastor John elaborates on this issue as he shares his book review of Biblical Knowing: A Scriptural Epistemology of Error (Cascade Books, April 2013) by Dr. Dru Johnson, Associate Professor of Biblical and Theological Studies at The King’s College, NYC.

Quotes include excerpts from James Gordon’s James Denney (1856-1917): An Intellectual and Contextual Biography (Milton Keynes: Paternoster, 2006).
